2009-2010 Pennsylvania Gaming Diversity Report Available On Gaming Control Board Web Site

HARRISBURG, PA: The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board today released its third diversity report of the Commonwealth’s gaming industry.

The report, required under the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, is available for download on the Board’s web site home page, www.pgcb.state.pa.us.

The 2009-10 Diversity Report provides statewide and individual casino statistics:

•    Employment trends by race and gender
•    Construction and non-construction expenditures with minority businesses
•    Charitable donations

The report’s statistics are through June 30, 2010 and do not reflect all of the expended opportunities for monitories and women related to July’s rollout of table games nor the opening of Pennsylvania’s 10th casino, Philadelphia’s SugarHouse Casino, in September.

Mozelle Daniels, the Board’s Director of Diversity, says Pennsylvania casinos have shown a commitment to extending job opportunities fairly to minorities and in their contracting efforts with companies owned by minorities and women.

“Pennsylvania casinos, as a whole, have done an excellent job in the areas of recruitment, retention training and promotion from within of minorities and women,” says Daniels. “In addition, they have also demonstrated an incredible good faith effort in contracting with minority and woman-owned business enterprises for goods and services.”

Under the Gaming Act, the Board is charged with promoting and ensuring diversity in all aspects of gaming activities. In kind, the Board developed diversity rules and regulations to assist the agency in accomplishing its goals. The diversity regulations established the policies and procedures for promoting and ensuring that the regulated entities foster participation and diversity in all aspects of their operations in the Commonwealth. This regulatory oversight by the Board includes diversity participation, establishment of a diversity plan, the reporting of participation, audits, and labor hiring preferences.

About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board was established in 2004 with the passage of Act 71, also known as the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act. Pennsylvania’s first new state agency in nearly 40 years, the Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of the state’s casino industry. To date, with ten of a maximum fourteen casinos in operation, legalized gaming in the Commonwealth has created nearly 14,000 new living wage jobs, revenue that has provided property tax reduction in each of the past three years for all homeowners, funds that have reinvigorated Pennsylvania’s horse racing industry, and new revenue to local governments that has funded scores of community projects.
